Spotlight: Student Affairs

"The Division of Student Affairs has benefited from the results of the UNM Engagement Survey as we seek to increase engagement and develop our new division strategic plan aligned with UNM 2040.

Upon receiving the results, our leadership team immediately identified Q12: Learn and Grow as an opportunity for us. These results affirmed our investment in a professional development committee which has been charged and formed.

The committee will focus on onboarding, continued development content, and a sustained culture of professional growth. The leadership team also reviewed the full results at our mid-year retreat and brainstormed additional potential engagement practices which are influencing division practice and investment moving forward. We are looking forward to this year’s results with an emphasis on unit and team level culture and engagement."

Spotlight: HSC Finance & Administration

"HSC Finance and Administration Shared Services has found great value in how the results of the UNM 2023 Staff Engagement Survey have been shared with managers. Having the ability to zero in on team strengths and areas of opportunity has given my team a look into how we can grow together and be stronger as one unit.

During our State of the Team meetings, together we reviewed the survey results, discussed areas where scores were lower than we’d hoped or expected, and then developed an action plan that allowed us to focus on our first target area.

With guidance from the Gallup site, along with a strong partnership with EOD, our team has begun to move forward and make improvements in our Year 1 chosen focus area. The Shared Services team understands that this is an organic process and, together, we will pivot and adjust as necessary in order to ensure that each team member is fully engaged and included for the betterment of the University, the team, and, most importantly, the individual."

Spotlight: Project ECHO

"ECHO’s Management Action Program (MAP) enables our managers and supervisors to collaborate on actions that make our workplace a better one. MAP projects and actions support ECHO’s organizational strategic priorities, which also align with HSC’s strategic priorities, as well as the UNM 2040 plan.

For fall of 2023, our focus in MAP was the Gallup Engagement Survey data and managers held State of the Team Conversations to share the engagement data with their respective teams. In addition to selecting one action for their own team to work on, managers also brought back one action for the MAP group’s consideration.

For 2024, our focus in MAP is employee engagement and loyalty, and managers will create several projects to collaborate on this spring. Current top picks, based on the Gallup data and feedback from teams, are: Q7 Opinions Count; Q8 Mission Makes My Job Important; Q9 Team Committed to Quality Work."

Spotlight: School of Medicine, Department of Neurology

"The survey helped guide our department’s strategic approach. It brought to light some issues that our leadership were unaware of and it gave us the opportunity to address them.

As a result, we planned a staff retreat where we enlisted the help of EOD, Ombuds and Security to provide helpful and needed information to our team.  These resources and the trainings they provided taught us new and creative methods for team building, improved communication and safety – approaches we can continue to use on a daily basis."
